Preserve or Strip EXIF Metadata

EXIF metadata contains information stored inside image files, such as camera settings, capture date, GPS coordinates, device information, orientation data, and other technical details. LessFlux allows you to choose whether this metadata should be preserved or removed during image optimization.

For most websites, removing EXIF metadata can reduce file size and improve privacy. However, some photographers, media organizations, and image archives may prefer to keep this information intact.

What Is EXIF Metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata is additional information embedded within an image file. Depending on how the image was created, this data may include:

  • Camera make and model
  • Image capture date and time
  • Exposure settings
  • ISO values
  • Lens information
  • GPS location data
  • Image orientation information
  • Software used to create or edit the image

While this information is not normally visible to website visitors, it remains embedded within the file and can often be viewed by downloading the image.

How to Configure EXIF Metadata Handling

  1. Open your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Navigate to LessFlux → Image Settings.
  3. Locate the Preserve EXIF Metadata option.
  4. Enable the setting to keep metadata during optimization.
  5. Disable the setting to remove metadata during optimization.
  6. Save your changes.

The selected behavior will be applied to newly optimized images going forward.

When to Remove EXIF Metadata

Removing EXIF metadata is recommended for most WordPress websites. Since the metadata is usually unnecessary for displaying images on the web, removing it can help reduce file size and eliminate potentially sensitive information.

This option is particularly useful for:

  • WooCommerce stores
  • Marketing websites
  • Landing pages
  • Portfolio websites that do not require camera information

When to Preserve EXIF Metadata

You may want to preserve EXIF metadata if the information itself is important for your workflow or audience.

  • Websites that rely on image location or camera data

Preserving metadata ensures that the original image information remains available after optimization.

How EXIF Metadata Affects Optimization

EXIF metadata is handled separately from image compression. Whether metadata is preserved or removed does not change the visual quality of the image itself.

However, images that have metadata removed will typically be slightly smaller than identical images that retain their metadata.

Important Notes

  • EXIF metadata is either fully preserved or fully removed.
  • LessFlux does not selectively remove individual EXIF fields.
  • The setting applies when images are processed by LessFlux.
  • Changing this setting does not automatically modify images that have already been optimized.
  • Previously optimized images must be reprocessed if you want the new metadata behavior to apply.

For most WordPress websites, removing EXIF metadata is the recommended option. It reduces unnecessary file data, improves privacy, and helps achieve the smallest possible image sizes without affecting visual quality.
